Don’t Make This Silly Mistake When It Comes To Your Toto Asia
The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its “base” markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words to ensure that the future generation could read the words. However, many words were replaced with foreign ones, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
The early history of Toto which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan’s economic growth. In the first half of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. To achieve this, it used the country’s first tunnel kiln to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began to expand overseas in order to profit from sales and new markets. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers’ products in order to expand its range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the company’s market share in the world.
In the 90s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve its customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to managing its supply chain, and it used the same methodology for its sales process. This led to a higher level of satisfaction of customers.
Toto continues to invent with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than conventional models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made of ceramics), the history of plumbing, and products such as bath units. In an additional gallery, you can see Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum also has a bathroom that features a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto the members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia one would expect the group to be prog queens and kings – but it’s actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The band was initially four-piece, and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980’s Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a variety of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its share of issues. The record companies put the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the aid of the smash single “Africa.”
Toto’s musical mastery is a result of their previous experience, as the band members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for ’80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.
The album opens up hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band’s ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR which could appear completely unnatural, but actually is very effective.
After Toto IV, the band’s fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band had to go through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. However, the band was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto’s final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up
The band’s third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball’s improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich’s work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band’s Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the band’s first album without one single track titled “A”. The album also included a previously unreleased track titled “Kari-Anne”.
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
